Polite and familiar address in Russian

One of the difficulties that people learning Russian encounter at the very beginning is the presence of two forms of address in Russian: familiar “ты” and polite “Вы”.

The form “ты” is generally used among friends and relatives, and the form “Вы” is used in formal situations. The use of familiar form of address without agreement of the other person may be considered extremely rude. It is also important to mention that there are 2 forms (respectful and familiar) of greetings and formulas of politeness in the Russian language.
